Erin Haust knows a good thing when she sees it. She believes that the Prior Lake-Savage Area School District is excellent and that the current board has done a good job to maintain that excellence.
“I don’t think the board needs a major overhaul, but I do think it needs a little tweaking. I want to be part of something that is already good, and I think the skills and experience I can bring to the table will help it function even better,” she said.
The biggest issue she sees facing the district today is its continued growth.
“We are still in a growth mode and because of that, we need a long-term vision for its future. We obviously have to solve temporary problems, but in general, my focus would be on formulating a long-term vision for the district and its students,” she explained.
Overcrowding in the district’s schools, particularly in the high school, is also an issue that Haust knows must be dealt with.
“District-wide, we have enough space for our students and we even have room to grow up to an additional 1,000 students per our self-imposed capacity. However, the space is not used appropriately,” she pointed out.
According to Haust, even the high school has enough space, but it does not have enough teachers nor enough differentiated classrooms such as labs.
“We don’t need to build more schools, but we do need to use our space more efficiently,” Haust stated.
Haust also believes in fiscal accountability.
“We are still in the black, and I want it to stay that way. The Prior Lake-Savage community deserves a high level of fiscal accountability from their School Board representatives. Simply put, we shouldn’t spend money we don’t have, and there should be transparency in the budget and spending.”
She also feels strongly that the board must be the springboard that puts schools back on track to meet and exceed Adequate Yearly Progress, as currently defined by the No Child Left Behind act.
Haust and her husband, Matt, have three children, including a third-grader and a fifth-grader at Five Hawks Elementary School and a preschooler who will enter kindergarten next year.
They have lived in Prior Lake for a year and a half and chose Prior Lake for their home because of its excellent school system, she said.
“We hope to stay here throughout our children’s educational years, because we believe strongly in the schools,” she stated.
She also feels that being new to the area gives her a fresh perspective. Haust has volunteered in other school districts in the past and also has volunteered on others’ political campaigns.
Haust graduated cum laude from the University of South Florida with a degree in communications and marketing. She has more than 10 years of professional experience in management, human resources and communications in both the public and private sectors.
There are six candidates competing for three seats on the board in the Nov. 3 election.
When asked why she decided to run for the board this year, she said, “Now is a good time for me. I care about the future of the school district and I just felt that it was my time to step up to the plate and do my part to help provide our students with every opportunity to reach their full potential.
“I will be responsive and receptive to parents and students, teachers, staff and administrators and the community at large, encouraging open dialogue,” she continued. “Our entire community is directly impacted by the success of our public schools and therefore, the entire community should have a voice.”
She also said she feels pride and optimism for the school district.
“We have excellent schools and administration, and I want to keep the momentum going,” she said.

Back to page topRemember, Erin Haust offers such a unique perspective that she filed to be on the ballot for both city council and the school board in Prior Lake. I read her answers in the PL American and I am unimpressed. She offers no depth and no insight. I have seen her blog and twitter and all she does is spout the party talking points.

Back to page topThankfully Erin Haust has the views consistent with the conservative nature of this district. This "Change" of spending, big government, and unsustainable debt is a recipe for disaster. The national debt has tripled since Bush left office. Think about that for a minute. Erin - keep up the good work. Very interesting to see that the democrats have given up on the Virginia governor's race. The country is waking up to the fact that this change in Washington is doing nothing more than spending our kids down the river. Erin deserves your consideration on Tuesday.

You are wondering why Tom Rees, aka 1ScottRep, is interested in Prior Lake politics? A fair question. While my mailing address is “Lakeville” my home of over 30 years is Scott County. During a few of those years I was honored by representing Prior Lake (and every other municipality, township, and school district in Scott County plus some jurisdictions in surrounding counties) in the Minnesota legislature.
I have known a lot of wonderful people who live in Prior Lake and the surrounding area.
What piqued my interest was when I read the Q&A in the Savage Pacer concerning Ms. Haust’s candidacy: The first question that was posed to her she by the interviewer she did not answer. It bothers me as a citizen that we allow too many politicians and wannabe politicians to avoid answering questions to their constituents and those that they wish to be constituents.
I have not to my recollection ever met Ms. Haust and other than her writings I have no knowledge of her competence in representing the area. Truthfully, until you are in the job of School Board member – which I contend is the toughest job for any local elected official for reasons too numerous to cite at this time – you really do not know what the real challenges are or will be.
I thought it was interesting that in none of the local news coverage was there any mention of Ms. Haust’s blogging effort. I felt that at least one sentence that she had written should be included for the record allowing potential voters a flavor of her politics.
I trust my contribution assisted the decision making of voters of the Prior Lake area.

Back to page topWhat bothered me about Ms. Haust is she couldn’t figure out what she wanted to do in applying to be on the ballot for two different seats. I have seen her articles and twitters and she is very good at communicating the right wing talking points, specifically attacking the president. She is highly involved with the Scott county GOP and it appeared she got marching orders from either the SC GOP or CAG to be on some ballot, no matter her interest. The first post by 1ScottRep kind of proves my point. Then in a latter post, tells about her shortcomings in avoiding the question in the paper, but then says she is an excellent candidate because she tows the company line. I was astounded she wants to put 50 students in each HS class.
Serving on the school board is not about politics. It’s about ensuring the opportunity of all students to become productive citizens and members of society while being there to control and manage the district.

Back to page topLOL! Ms. Haust lost by a mere 87 votes, just shy of 1% of the pathetic voter turnout. I doubt your comments reached 87 people and changed their minds!
Congratulations to Prior Lake on choosing new members for city council and congrats to Mr. Myser as well. I too hope he will remember that it wasn't the entire city that voted for him, but from what I've read about him I have confidence in his abilities. We should support his efforts and continue to voice our opinions to him.
For all who voted to keep the same old group for school board, let's not hear any complaints when Ms. Shimek recommends raising your taxes again to build onto the high school. Let's not hear your complaints when the Growth Task Force comes back with the same recommendations this time around and the board votes blindly for them. Let's not hear you complain when we continue to have overcrowding, increased spending (despite decreasing funding), and don't complain when the board bows to the will of the union to the detriment of our school system... AGAIN.

Back to page topWell, I am one of those people who think the school board and administration have done a bad job over the last 10 years as bond funds have been made available by the tax payers of the district. I view education as an investment in our future, and think the buildings that have been built could have been built with greater payback on the investment by better designs and more flexibilty for the long term. I did feel forced to vote for the incumbents for no other reason but to keep Erin Haust off the school board. We cannot affort to have people who just want a political seat and have no real capabilities other than being a right-wing blogger. We need people with professional credentials, who can come up with real solutions and make a difference. No-one on the school board can do that today, so we need a better class of candidates.

There were two other candidates besides the incumbents and Erin Haust. They were both professionally credentialed engineers and from their bios seemed to be pretty sharp. Why not vote for them?
