Second investigation into veteran's death calls for change

A second investigation report into the suicide death of Marine Veteran Jonathan Schulze calls for the Veterans Administration hospitals to make treatment accessible.

The independent report released Thursday by the VA inspector general recommends that the hospitals better document patient conversations and take initiative in contacting patients.

Rep. John Kline was one member of congress who requested the additional investigation into Schulze's case.

Kline shared the 25-year-old Marine veteran's battle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and his January suicide in a presentation to the U.S. House for the Joshua Omvig Veterans Suicide Prevention Act March 21. The new legislation would provide additional support to returning veterans and would make health programs more accessible.

The inspector general's report appeared to go into greater depth than the previous report by the office of the medical inspector.

While the report still did not verify family allegations that Schulze told caregivers he was suicidal and sought in-patient treatment at the St. Cloud VA, it did say that if he had told staff he were suicidal, that information should have set a very different set of evaluations and treatments in place.

Schulze's Mother Eileen Carlson of Prior Lake has stood by her statement that her son stated he was suicidal to health workers at the St. Cloud VA, and that he was not accepted for in-patient care and was placed at No. 26 on waiting list after a phone evaluation the following day - just days before his suicide.

The family has since started its own nonprofit, the Jonathan Schulze Foundation, which they say will serve as an independent resource to help support returning Veterans.

A benefit will take place May 19 at the Prior Lake VFW, 16302 Main Ave. with a silent auction and bake sale beginning at 3 p.m., followed by a dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m., dancing, raffles, prizes and auctions.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Schulze's children (Kaley and Jonathan) and the foundation. Tickets are available at the Prior Lake VFW.
