Mudcats notch a pair of DRS victories
July 3, 2008 - 8:43am — Mark Nesvig
After taking two out of their past three, the Prior Lake Mudcats raised their record to 12-5 overall as the all-star break draws near. The annual all-star game between the Dakota-Rice-Scott and River Valley leagues is set for July 11 at Arlington. Representing Prior Lake on the DRS team are Noah Rezac, Ben Schmidt and Greg Faue. Rezac leads the team with a .413 batting average this year, while Faue (.359) and Schmidt (.344) rank second and third, respectively. Another Mudcat, Bret Mitchell, likely would’ve received an invitation, as well, had he not been asked to join the Rochester Honkers of the Northwoods League. Mitchell, a native of Lakeville, had been virtually unhittable on the mound for the Mudcats this season, posting a 1.42 ERA and allowing just 15 hits while striking out 30 batters in 25-and-a-third innings of work. Mitchell scored three times and drove in a run to help the Mudcats to an 11-9 victory over Webster June 26. Prior Lake got three hits apiece from Rezac, who scored twice and drove in a run, and Schmidt, who drove in three runs. The Mudcats also got two hits apiece from Justin Schliep, who collected two RBIs and picked up the win in relief, and Levi Schneider, who also walked. Faue also got into the act with a solo home run that got the Mudcats on the board in the second inning. Prior Lake faced Union Hill in a battle for first place in the division the following day and dropped an 11-4 decision. Schmidt had three hits and scored twice for the Mudcats, with the other hits belonging to Rezac, Schliep, Schneider and Nick Johnson. The Mudcats got back on track June 29, rolling to an 11-3 victory over Veseli. Jake Schmidt picked up the win on the mound for Prior Lake, allowing two earned runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out eight in seven innings of work. B.J. Benz provided much of the offense, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and a home run. He scored twice and drove in four runs. Casey Johnson had a big day at the plate for the Mudcats, as well, going 3-for-4 with a home run. The Mudcats also got two hits apiece from Mitchell, Nick Johnson and Ben Schmidt. Prior Lake will be back in action on Thursday, July 10, playing host to New Prague at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Park’s Veterans Field.
