Boys golf: Lakers take second at invite
May 8, 2008 - 7:06pm — Tom Schardin
By Tom Schardin, Staff Writer Sophomore Alex Zeyen led the Prior Lake boys golf team at a Missota Conference quadrangular meet on May 5 at Fountain Valley Golf Course. Zeyen shared co-medalist honors with three other golfers firing a 5-over par 77. The Lakers finished second with a team score of 319. New Prague was the winner with a 313, while Shakopee was third (325) and Farmington was fourth (335). Senior Luke Metzger had the Lakers’ second-best score with an 80, while junior Coby Rowley and ninth-grader John Hafdal each had 81. Seniors Bill Chopp and Ethan Heise rounded out the Lakers’ top six with an 82 and 93, respectively. The Lakers headed into the quadrangular on the heels of a second-place finish at the Red Bird Invitational on May 1 at the Montgomery Golf Club. Prior Lake’s team score of 329 was only one shot behind champion Mayer Lutheran. Waseca also shot 329, but the Lakers won the tiebreaker and runner-up honors because their fifth score was better than Waseca’s fifth golfer. Blue Earth Area was fourth (332), followed by Montgomery-Lonsdale (344), St. Peter (350), LeSueur-Henderson and Belle Plaine (365) and United South Central (410). Hafdal led the Lakers with a 7-over par 79. Chopp had 81, while senior Scott Lee had 84. Metzger and Rowley each shot 85, while Zeyen carded an 87. “We’re still in the 320s as a team,” said Lakers coach Russ Lussenhop. “Our goal is still to be in the low teens, better than the 319 at Fountain Valley.” The Lakers will return to the links on Wednesday, May 14 when it competes in conference tournament at Crow River Country Club starting at 3 p.m. The Missota Championships are set for May 19 at the Ridges of Sand Creek Golf Course in Jordan starting a 1 p.m.
