Faces: Mother makes keepsakes for kids
October 5, 2007 - 9:46am — Shawn Hogendorf
By Shawn Hogendorf Staff Writer
Kelli Johnston moved to Prior Lake from Duluth two months ago because her husband Matt got a job as a teacher at Prior Lake High School.
She worked in geriatrics in Duluth. Johnston is now a stay-at-home mom with her 4-year-old daughter Mia and her newborn son Patrick. Johnston said she enjoys cooking, reading about nutrition and health-related issues, playing tennis and scrapbooking. She said she began scrapbooking about six years ago when a girl on her dorm room floor at the University of Wisconsin-Superior showed her a scrapbook. Johnston said she enjoys taking and cropping digital photos of her family and assembling them in a scrapbook with stamps, stickers and paper cutouts. “It’s a great way to gather memories of different important parts of my family’s life,” she said. When Johnston first started scrapbooking, she said there wasn’t very much to choose from at craft stores, but in the last three or four years, small scrapbooking businesses have popped up all over. “Scrapbooking is really relaxing, and you feel very organized,” Johnston said. “Pictures are an important part of establishing memories. To create a book creates life-long memories.” Q and A with Kelli Johnston What do you like about Prior Lake? We love our new neighbors. I like the fact that this is a nice, quiet and beautiful city. I love Lakefront Park and all the green areas in the city. If you were president for a day, what would you change?I would change the benefits and money available to senior citizens’ health care. What is your favorite season? Fall. I love the outdoor aroma of fall. I also like the foods that are associated with the season, like apple pie and casseroles. What is the last good book you read? “Mommy Teach Me” by Barbara Curtis. Who’s your favorite singer? Allison Krauss. Shawn Hogendorf can be reached at (952) 345-6374 or shogendorf@swpub.com.
