Six years ago, Karla Haugen embarked on a mission to bring to Prior Lake a high-quality farmers market that could compete with the big markets in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Mission accomplished.

Haugen, organizer of the Prior Lake Farmers Market, is ready to launch the sixth season with new vendors, returning favorites and local companies showcasing their specialties.

New this year are Well Pet Foods, a Prior Lake company specializing in organic pet meals, and Laurie Pyle, a local personal chef and caterer.

Haugen will bring back some of the staples that have made the market a success in previous years. From Breezy Acres Bison and Lorence Berry Farm to Castle Brewery’s root beer (bottled in Spring Lake Township), the market has become a destination for people throughout the Twin Cities, Haugen said.

Market-goers can taste breakfast and lunch selections cooked on site every Saturday, as well as a variety of coffees and teas. Great Harvest Bread and Prior Lake’s own Edelweiss Bakery top off the list.

Farmers offering produce include the Schwartz Family Farm, with spinach, lettuce, carrots, popcorn, rhubarb, zucchini and more; Severs Farm Market, featuring sweet corn and garden vegetables; and Davidson Farm, with local honey and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Meadow Oaks Farm will have lamb’s wool, bedding, mittens, lamb meat and even aged sheep compost available. Farm on Wheels has organic chicken, turkey, beef, pork and eggs made without the use of medications, growth hormones or appetite stimulants. Fresh trout and salmon also are available.

Gullywash Gardens will have fresh-cut flowers and a variety of chemical-free heirloom-variety vegetables, and Twin Orchards will sell perennials and herbs. Morgan Creek Trees has trees available and tree moving and delivery options.

Haugen’s own Lauren Charles Soap Company features natural bath and body products.

Each week, the market will host a traveling artist. Also, once a month, an orchid grower and a wrought-iron artist will set up shop. Other offerings include a massage therapist and a biofeedback expert, a children’s booth and live music.
