Residents start petition to oust Lind

Average: 1 (1 vote)

A petition calling for Prior Lake-Savage Area School Board Member-Elect Chris Lind to release his personnel file and/or resign from the board has been posted online as of Dec. 13.

The petition states, "We believe it best for our district to have CHRIS LIND RESIGN from the ISD 719 School Board IMMEDIATELY."

To view the petition, visit http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/719cares/.

Look for more on the petition and reactions in upcoming articles in the Prior Lake American.

Petition away. The people already spoke in the election. The people who put forth this petition are probably the same people that still think Al Gore won and still have Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers on their cars. Your candidate(s) lost. Get over it!

Trying to pressure Chris Lind off the board is not going to bring Dr. Westerhaus back. In case you haven't noticed, he's about to be hired by the Wayzata district and he said it's not about Chris Lind, it's about over 3,000 people voting for Chris Lind and your petition is not going to change that fact. Give it up!

I cant stop laughing the citizens of Prior Lake-Savage they continue to give me some of the best comedy money cant buy. Let it die and Let Chris Lind do the job he was voted in to do. He has already trimmed 130K off the budget by causing Dr. "giveupandquit" to leave.

And shame on you Prior Lake American for even making this an newsworthy article have you even looked at some of the petitions on Ipetition? One is " Should I shave my Dog", Another is "Bring sexy Rex Grossman Back" come on whats next quoting blogs as facts?

Back to page top

The shear immature content of this comment and the one submitted by "Savage Guy" are perfect examples of the so called support Mr. Lind has...which I would be willing to bet is a bunch on 18-20 year olds who really don't have a clue the outcome of their actions-and also, parents of children Mr. Lind has befriended and are really in the shadows of what is actually happening.
Mr. Lind has brought disgrace to this community and if he truly cared about this community and his own family, he would accept responsibilty for the actions that led to his getting fired in the first place.
I hope the community takes this petition seriously-consider it a re-election and right at least one of the wrongs that has taken place here. And Bravo to the Prior Lake American for allowing the one's who truly care to have a voice!

Nope 43 yrs old and voted for Mr. Lind because we needed change,I guess I got tired of the way the school system was and is run. So your batting 1000 on assumptions. Your talking about a school system that has more drugs in it then the Target Center during a heavy metal concert. What was it 4 yrs ago I walked in the school and ask my son why people were caring around babies and he told me it was for a class. I said for a class! for what reason does a 16-17 yr old kid need to learn how to be a parent? Thats where our tax money went? Give me a break go sign your worthless petition that holds about as much water as a thimble.Ill just keep paying my taxes and not vote so people like you can make decisions like that.

And just HOW has Mr. Lind brought disgrace to the community? Apparently 3400+ of your fellow citizens agreed that the issues of his firing were not a "disgrace".

It appears to me that the "disgrace" is coming from people who simply can not accept that they lost the election.

Your assumption that 3400+ of your fellow citizens agreed that the issues of his firing were not a disgrace is a false one.

I voted for Chris Lind - but I will admit I totally goofed - I had no idea he was the same fellow who was fired. If I had realized that I would not have voted for him - I wonder how many other voters made the same error.

This is the problem with drawing conclusions from votes - you make assumptions which may not be true. People voting for Mr. Lind may not be stating that his firing was unjustified. There are other reasons people may have voted for him.

Again I have to ask....what did he do to "disgrace" the community? The paper did an admirable job covering the TRUTH of Chris' termination. Any of the other rumors (and yes I have heard the whisper campaign) are just that rumors that have even the Superintendent has said were false.

Let me turn the question around. We KNOW that Chris was fired for insubordination. How is that "disgracing the community"?

I won't say that Chris has disgraced the community, however, a school board member with a My Space is bothersome to me. You may not have said it Howe, but two others in this thread DID and I would really like to know what Chris did that was so disgraceful!

As far as the MySpace page goes....I have one and I am a bit older than Chris. I have one because I have friends across the country who are younger than me who have My Space pages and also so that I can see who my child has on HIS My Space page.

Lots of adults have My Space and Facebook pages. It's not all that odd.

I realize I may not have been clear. I do not believe Mr. Lind "disgraced" the community. I also believe he had every right to run for school board. I don't believe he shoud resign.

I just wanted to point out that not every vote for Mr. Lind was a refutation or rebuke of the school board's decision to fire him.

Mr. Westerhaus made the same assumption - that the votes for Mr. Lind were a rebuke of his authority and judgement. I just think things aren't always so simple.

Back to page top

The petition was deemed a story by our staff for at least a couple of reasons:

First, the subject matter. Lind's name has been embroiled in controversy at least since the election. The leader of the school district went on record saying Lind's election to the School Board is the one and only reason he is resigning.

Second, the community relevance. The outcome -- and fallout -- of the November election is far and wide the biggest story in Prior Lake right now. To ignore the fact that a group of residents in the school district has launched an attempt to remove an elected official would be irresponsible.

Certainly, our staff is working on getting more on this story. There are many questions to be asked. Among them: Who started this petition, and why? What do the current School Board members think about the petition? What does Lind himself think about it? And, perhaps most importantly, does it even hold water? Would the School Board be legally required to consider what the petition asks it to do? These are all questions we're in the process of finding answers to.

Back to page top

Chris Lind is an elected official. With that comes responsibility. It has been raised numerous times by both residents and the paper that he needs to answer some basic questions. For starters, will you release your personnel file and are you sueing the district? Chris Lind has ignored the public and has not fulfilled his responsibility. My take is this petition calls this out and asks for his resignation.

Furthermore, when is CAG going to demand accountability from Chris Lind? He ran on his platform of 'fiscal responsibility', but then when invited by Chairman Murray to join the finance committee, Chris refuses. What happened to his platform? It is time for people to start looking under the hood with this guy and start applying some common sense.

CAG? Ask CAG to demand accountability? CAG is a joke. Who's demanding accountability from CAG? Dig into the charter school facts that CAG and its bobos have presented to the public in this same newspaper and you'll find more mistakes than a preseason Vikings game. Truth is, Chris Lind was elected. The time for a common sense look under the hood is past. Now it's time to live with the results and move on.

It is beating the Spell Xylophone with a "Z" petition, but behind the "release Smurfs on DVD" petition.

The petition is irrelevant except for the fact that it will only further anger people who support Chris which might not bode well for future referendum votes nor for unifying the community.

As noconfidence points out, over a third of the signors haven't signed their names not to mention the fact that we already had an election back in November. Chris has survived the pressure thus far and hopefully will continue to survive.

However, I do have a question for Chris. Why did you decline the invitation to serve on the finance committee? Have to admit that doesn't seem to jive with your campaign message.

Thank you Savage Guy for...

Back to page top

Thank you Savage Guy for asking that question. Honestly, that is all people really want is for Chris to explain some of these things. When you run on a platform of fiscal responsibility and then decline the opportunity to serve on the finance committee the public has a right to an explaination. Also, Chris owes the public an answer to the question whether or not he is going to sue the district.

The petitioners don't argue the fact that Chris had the right to run and the right to win. The petitioners believe now, however, as an elected official Chris has a responsibility to answer some of these linguring questions. Plain and simple, that is all this is about.

Back to page top

Howe, if that were true
I have seen everything from Chris accused of being a child molester or that people who voted for him must have been stupid.

If people have questions for an elected officials, that have this really neat thing called a Public Meeting. They hold them monthly and you get to go there and ask anything you want. Of course in the past the board usually ignores those questions, but it is still the proper way to "petition" you government.

Starting a smear campaign in the local paper is not.

As to the committee question.
I can give you the reason why I might not want to serve on a subcommittee on a subject I care about.

The whole School Board will get a chance to discuss and debate the budget, so every issues is still influenced by every member.

Based on the actions of the past few weeks, there are still many on the board who want the status quo.

It might be better to have discussion on the budget at the public school board meeting, then getting ganged up on in a committee meeting.

It also gives you a more powerful position to oppose things you view as wasteful. If you served in the committee, the usual response is "we already discussed that in committee and decided it was necessary."

This is the reason some legislative representatives stop serving on a committee when there is a change in power. It is sometimes better to work with the whole legislative body(or board) and public where you might have a chance, then constantly lose against a stacked deck in committee.

Back to page top

I don't believe Chris has been asked any of these questions at a School Board meeting.
Those who had a vested interest in the referendum, immediately began attacking Chris and demanding he answer to them following the election
(And it should be noted, raising the same issues they were before the election.)

If they would behave like adults, they could show up at School Board meeting, make there concerns know and then make an adult decision based on that.

Instead they decided to run a smear campaign and make demands and silly petitions.

It is like a child demanding to be listened to know or they will hold there breath until they turn blue.

This is not how a representative government works. Each small group person doesn't get to make demands and then overturn an election if they don't get there way.

This is setting a very bad precedent.

Seeing he's not a school board member yet he can't be asked the question at a board meeting. He was asked the question during the campaign and after the election and hasn't answered.

Bad precedent? A petition fails in comparison to an elected official threatening to sue the entity for which he is going to serve. That, my friend, is the ultimate bad precedent.

I'll say it again. Chris, answer the question. Why is that so unreasonable?

Chris, please call the newspaper right now and answer the question. Its that simple.

Again, if think he owes you something because he is an elected official, then show up at the School Board meeting and ask him.

Please let me know what new issues not raised during the campaign are being raised that demand an answer now.
Take a look at the Stand-By web site to see the letters posted there bringing up these same issues during there campaign for the referendum.

What is a new question is why the issues with the teachers contract were not discussed during all those referendum meetings?

Indeed NoConfidence, he will answer on his own time.

In full disclosure, I know Chris and I have talked to him about the situation. One of the reasons why he has chosen not to answer these questions at this time is because they are being asked with a "gotcha" spirit. Those who are asking are looking for any statement, no matter how insignificant, to slam him with. The questions will probably not get answered until the the tenor of the conversation changes from "GOTCHA" to how can we move the community forward in a spirit of cooperation.

Sadly, I fear that will be a long time coming and that is going to hurt our children more than the referendum not passing will.

If he chooses to disclose that information, that is his choice, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Frankly, I could care less what the issue was - there were no criminal charges leveled, so it's really none of our business.

What baffles me about some of the Chris Lind supporters that post here is that, at least in what they type, it comes across that they truly believe that Chris Lind was the only caring member of the Prior Lake staff before he was fired and would solve the kid's/school's problems now because no one cares like him.

As far a My Space, I've seen it mentioned a few times and educators have NO BUSINESS being on My Space because it crosses over a very fine line. If a students can be suspended from sports for having a picture of them drinking on their My Space page, then teachers, faculty and staff who choose to have a page should be subject to the same standards in the comments, material and photos they post. That's why it's an issue.
