Man sentenced for assault of an officer, DWI
March 25, 2008 - 1:29pm — Shawn Hogendorf
By Shawn Hogendorf, Staff Writer A 29-year-old Prior Lake man was sentenced to serve two years in jail and eight years of probation for fourth-degree assault of a police officer, domestic assault and second-degree driving while impaired test refusal by Judge Thomas McCarthy in Scott County Court Jan. 16. Dominic Joseph Brewer also was sentenced to provide a DNA sample, undergo an abuse evaluation, complete a chemical abuse assessment and follow recommendations, attend a victim impact panel, remain law-abiding and pay $1,660 in fines. Charges of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, obstructing the legal process with force, second-degree driving while impaired, violating a restricted driver’s license and careless driving were dismissed. Brewer was arrested and jailed on Jan. 6, 2006, after Prior Lake police officer Rick Denmark responded to a call of a domestic situation in the 3300 block of Brewer Drive in Prior Lake. According to the criminal complaint, Denmark told Brewer he was under arrest and told him to put his hands behind his head. Brewer refused. Brewer yelled at Denmark and told him to get out of the house. A second man then stepped between Denmark and Brewer, who clinched his fists and told Denmark, “OK, let’s go.” Denmark then sprayed mace in Brewer’s face. The altercation continued outside the house when Brewer ordered a Rottweiler to attack Denmark. The dog began to circle Denmark. Brewer also circled Denmark with his fists clenched. The dog came up behind Denmark and bit him. Shakopee police officers assisted Denmark in controlling the dog, and Brewer was jailed. In a separate incident on Feb. 18, 2007, Brewer was arrested and jailed for second-degree DWI test refusal by the Shakopee Police Department. Brewer has a long list of criminal convictions in Scott County. In 2006, Brewer was convicted of gross-misdemeanor assault. In 2003, Brewer was convicted of domestic assault, fourth-degree assault of a police officer and second-degree DWI. In 1998, Brewer was convicted of third-degree assault after commanding a dog to attack a person and fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct. Brewer will begin serving his sentence on May 1.
