The three candidates in the Scott County Board of Commissioners District 2 primary – Tony Albright, Chris Olson and Tom Wolf – answered our questions about themselves and the challenges facing Scott County:

Q. Why are you running for county commissioner?

Three people are seeking the District 2 County Board seat, which includes Spring Lake, Credit River, Cedar Lake and New Market townships as well as the city of Elko New Market and two precincts in Savage. Incumbent Bob Vogel is not seeking re-election.

Chris and Tommy Sticha found a creative way to combine their passion for wiffleball into a fundraiser for breast cancer and a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The brothers organized a 30-hour marathon and had roughly 70 of their classmates and friends from the south metro area show up to participate.

The Prior Lake girls swimming team has growing expectations this season.

Not only do the Lakers have four state returnees, but more depth, a new coach and some talented up-and-comers.

The Prior Lake boys and girls cross country teams will use the first the meet of the season as a stepping stone.

The girls team finished sixth out of 19 teams at the two-mile Irish Invitational in Rosemount on Aug. 29, while the boys team was 14th. Prior Lake coach Dan Saad said it’s a solid start, but he expects a better road ahead for both squads.

“For the girls, it was a good showing,” said Saad. “I really didn’t know what to expect going in. We’ll improve on this.”

The Prior Lake volleyball team earned its first win of the season on Aug. 28 in convincing fashion.

Led by senior Brittni Wangerin and junior Emily Holte, the Lakers earned a 25-18, 25-19, 25-12 sweep of Faribault in a non-conference match.

The Prior Lake girls soccer team has had its share of wire-to-wire games to start its 2008 campaign.

Four of the Lakers’ first five games have been decided by one goal, and three have been decided in the final five minutes of play, including two in the final minute.

The Lakers have won one of those games, an impressive 1-0 non-conference victory over Minnetonka on Aug. 28.

Mike Shebuski wanted one thing from his Prior Lake boys soccer team in its Missota Conference opener on Sept. 2.

A solid effort for 80 minutes.

The Lakers earned a 1-1 tie on the road against Northfield. Shebuski and his team would  have preferred a win, but he’ll take the outcome because his team played hard from start to finish.
