Joint-training facility gets another $1 million from state
April 8, 2008 - 10:26am — Lori Carlson
Prior Lake officials have received word that the bonding bill approved by Gov. Tim Pawlenty includes $1 million in state funding for the second phase of the Scott County Public Safety Training Center. The center, already partially built with local and state funding and ready to begin operations, wasn't part of the governor's bonding proposal. It was only included in the Senate's bonding legislation but still made it into the final bill agreed to by the House and Senate. The center is located at the historic Mudbaden site in Sand Creek Township. The bill was signed into law after the overall amount of general obligation bonding in the bill was reduced from $925 million to $717 million. Prior Lake Mayor Jack Haugen, who testified about the need for funding before House and Senate capital investment committees this session, said he was "concerned" the money would not be included in the bonding bill. "This is pretty exciting," he said. The $1 million allocation for Phase II will allow for purchase of a driving simulator for public safety and public works vehicles and the addition of simulators to the fire tower -- both "critical components" of the facility, said City Manager Frank Boyles. - Lori Carlson
