Remodeling Progress

Two weeks into the project and lots of changes.

When I got home from work on Tuesday we had a vaulted kitchen! Temporarily. During the day the carpenters tore out the kitchen ceiling and the decking of the flat roof so that only the old ceiling joists remained. The walls and roof of the new second story bedroom are all framed in and sheathed and cover the huge open space below. The kitchen is now bare with only the built-in oven and cooktop remaining on the east wall and the sink on the south wall. The upper cabinets are gone along with most of the dark wall panelling. Behind the panelling were various types of wood, very wide horizontal boards and some narrow vertical beadboard strips painted green, covering the studs.

One thing we did expect and plan for was the possibility of water damage in the corners and they sure did find it. The flat roof had a railing around it and we could tell before we had even started that the corner posts were rotten at the base and water was probably going down into the corners of the old kitchen. When the lower cabinets and panelling were removed they found lots of rotten wood that will have to be replaced.

The fridge is now sitting in the middle of the dining room in front of the dining room table backed up to the window. The kitchen table is also in the dining room backed up to the old upright piano. For now we can continue to use the cooktop morning (for the tea kettle) and evening (for dinner) but that could change by next week.
After that we will have to depend on our microwave and toaster oven.

The new floor joists for the bedroom were put in yesterday and the concrete block foundation is done. Now they can start backfilling in around the porch foundation.
