The combination of the Vikings beating the 49ers last week and the Cardinals loss to the Seahawks found the Vikings in sole possession of the final playoff spot in the NFC with three games left and a 7-6 record.
So bottom line is if the Vikings win out, they are in the playoffs.
The Vikings will play the Bears and Redskins at home in the national spot light and finish the regular season in Denver.
The other teams vying for the final playoff spot in the NFC are the Cardinals, Saints, Lions and Redskins all with 6-7 records.
The long-shot playoff hopefuls are the Eagles, Bears and Panthers all with 5-8 records.
The playoff picture will become much clearer after this week when the Vikings, who are 4-1 in the last five games, play the Bears. The Saints and Cardinals play each other and the Redskins play the Giants.
The loser of the Saints and Cardinals game all but fall out of the picture. The Redskins, who are 1-4 in the last five games, need a win against the Giants to keep pace giving them a chance to catch the Vikings when they come to the Dome in two weeks. The Lions, who have lost the last five games, play the Chargers.
In my opinion, the Redskins have the toughest road to the playoffs if the Cowboys lose in the next two weeks and have something to play for. The Redskins remaining schedule pits them against playoff contenders such as the Giants and Vikings.
If the Cardinals can win this week against the Saints, they have an easy path playing the Falcons and Rams in the final two weeks, but with the loss against the Seahawks they need the Vikings to lose one of the final three games.
The Saints have to run the table on the road and get some help with losses by other playoff contenders. The Saints will play the Cardinals, Eagles and Bears. This is a tough task for a team that has gone 3-2 in the last five games.
The Lions have lost five in a row, but because of a strong start still have a chance. The Lions have to play the Chargers, Chiefs and Packers.
The Eagles play the Cowboys, Saints and Bills. Even if the Eagles win out, they need other teams to lose.
The Bears play the Vikings, Packers and Saints.
The Panthers play three division leaders the Bucs, Cowboys and Seahawks.
I think the Saints are the...
Back to page topI think the Saints are the team that Vikings should worry about the most. If the Vikings stumble once in its last three games and the Saints win out, both would be 9-7.
And the Saints would have a better NFC record knocking the Vikes out.
Can the Saints run the table? They should be able to handle the Cards and the hapless Bears. At Philly will be a tough one. And the Saints may be a better team offensively without Reggie Bush. They can just run their offense instead of trying to find creative ways to get Bush the ball in space.
Bush has been a major disappointment in his first two years. Where are all the big plays? He's ineffective between the tackles. Looks like the Texans made the right mover afterall in not drafting him. And I was one who thought the Texans screwed that up royally.
Well, I'm a little worried...
Back to page topWell, I'm a little worried about those Saints, as well.
I agree, the Saints biggest test could come against Philly, but I am not ruling the Bears out of anything when it comes to playing a spoiler.
Looks like the Vikes are going to have to put themselves in the playoffs by winning out.
It's a big game tonight against the Bears.
Should be a good one.
I'll be cheering tonight...
Back to page topI'll be cheering tonight from the cheap seats -- Go Bears!
Have fun with that... Hope...
Back to page topHave fun with that... Hope you don't cheer for the Bears too loud, those seats can get roudy.
Do you really think Kyle Orton will give you something to cheer about?
Predictions from the pundits...
Back to page topPredictions from the pundits in Chicago don't look pretty for the Bears -- and they all have something to say about Orton, as well as AP.
This actually will be the first time I've ever attended a professional football game vs. watching it on TV so I'm psyched regardless of how it ends up.
I wouldn't exactly say I was...
Back to page topI wouldn't exactly say I was crying in my oatmeal this morning over the outcome of the game -- and I had a good time when I could see what was going on.
We were in row 712 (or so it seemed as I was huffing and puffing and dizzy by the time I fell into my seat) in an end zone and my depth perception is such that I couldn't understand why there was a wire stretched across the field. Then I figured out that it was for the OVERhead camera and wasn't on the turf.
I decided that watching football in person is about like golf for me because I had trouble following the ball (again with the depth perception). Once the ball left one player's hands or was kicked, I couldn't always see where it went next.
Also, football fans are a bit rowdier than fans of other sporting evnets I've attended and two Vikings fans a few rows in front of us actually got into a fistfight with each other at one point. Not sure what happened to the guy who swung first, but the other guy had a heckuva shiner by the time the game ended. Another guy was getting dragged out by two cops shortly after halftime as I was making my way back from the bathroom. He did not look happy -- or sober.
There was also some vomiting going on around us -- and I'm guessing it wasn't from the altitude.
The biggest mystery team to...
Back to page topThe biggest mystery team to me this year is the Giants. How did this team get to 9 wins?!? They looked awful against us and awful against Washington and yet they almost have the #5 seed locked up. Incredible.
We control our own destiny. Win out and leave nothing to chance! Go Vikes!
I'm with you Savage Guy, Go...
Back to page topI'm with you Savage Guy, Go Vikes (and win out).
The Giants really do look bad don't they.
I blame it in part to injuries and in part to Eli Manning, who is not the quarterback anyone in New York probably wishes he was.
As much of a near lock as they have on a playoff bid, if they don't win next week against the Bills they could be in trouble as their playoff chances would rely on them beating the Pats (good luck with that).
Should be a good race to the finish.

Back to page topEli's better than most give him credit for. Their defense is terrible.

Back to page topOne down, two to go.
This wasn't a pretty victory but it was a notch in the win column.
Go Vikes.
A win is a win is a win....
Back to page topA win is a win is a win. That said, TJack needs to play better if we are going to go anywhere in the playoffs.
I agree. From here on out if...
Back to page topI agree. From here on out if the Vikings make the playoffs there is no way they can turn the ball over four times and win. Thank goodnes the Bears' offense is really that bad.
What about my Browns? Now...
Back to page topWhat about my Browns? Now there's a team!
Your Browns are looking...
Back to page topYour Browns are looking good, but the AFC is tough.
If I were the Pats there is no way I want to play the Browns or Jaguars in the playoffs.
I don't think the Pats can...
Back to page topI don't think the Pats can really be stopped by either team considering they'll be playing at home. Have they ever lost a playoff game at home under Brady? The only saving grace might be if the weather kicks up like it did last weekend.
I honestly don't think the...
Back to page topI honestly don't think the Pats can be stopped either, but all of the teams that will make the AFC playoffs are solid on both offense and defense, which will make for some great games.
As you said, Rational Thought, the fact that the Pats are playing at home throughout the playoffs and Brady has never lost a home playoff game makes them a tough team to upset.
Even if the weather does kick up, I don't think there is a team that can beat the Pats.
