Vikings’ blog: C’mon Troy
December 31, 2007 - 11:57am — Shawn Hogendorf
I am not going to lie… When Troy Williamson was drafted seventh overall in 2005 I bought into the excitement. A fast, young receiver who could step into a role of stretching the defense with one little set-back, his hands were questionable. Questionable? There is nothing questionable about Williamson’s hands. He can’t catch. What good does stretching the defense do if you don’t have to cover the guy? How do you drop a pass that hits you in the shoulder pads, when the playoffs are on the line and there isn’t a defender within 15 yards? My follow-up question is how do you come back into the game and drop the next pass that would give the offense a first down and keep the ball moving? Concentrate Troy. See the ball into your hands, Troy. Catch the ball, then run, Troy. My third question, how did Williamson fool people throughout college into thinking he could catch a ball? This is going to be painful (not as painful as watching a millionaire drop an easy TD) but here is a list of the guys Williamson was chosen over. This is obviously not a comprehensive list of guys taken after Williamson, for that visit, www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?season=2005. Here goes: DeMarcus Ware, Shawne Merriman, Heath Miller, J.J. Arrington, Frank Gore, Ellis Hobbs, Brandon Jacobs and Brady Poppinga just to name a few. What changes do you think the Vikings need to make next year? Should Williamson be cut, traded or kept around for further “development”?

The really sad thing is...
Back to page topThe really sad thing is that, if you were set on taking a WR there, Williamson has done more than just about every receiver taken in that draft to this point.
Williamson should...
Back to page topWilliamson should definitely be cut. Next to D.J. Dozier, he might be one of the worst draft picks the Vikings have ever made.
That drop by Williamson was...
Back to page topThat drop by Williamson was the worst drop of a pass that I have ever seen in an NFL game. Sadly, in spite of all his hard work, Williamson cannot catch the ball on a consistent basis and should be cut.
Worst draft pick? He's up there, but don't forget the D-line guy Denny drafted who went off the deep end and never played for the Vikes.
