Top five reasons I won't be going out for St. Patrick's Day

No votes yet

Though I love St. Patrick's Day (I'm 100-percent Irish, at least in my heart), I'm always disappointed by the bar scene on this "holiday." Every year, I think it's a good idea to join my friends for a drink on St. Patty's; every year, I walk away irritated and smelling of the beer some idiot spilled on me. I'm almost glad I have a City Council meeting to attend tonight.

Here's why:

5. The bars are so packed on St. Patrick's Day that it takes 10 minutes to walk from the door to the bar and another 20 minutes to get a drink. Then what? There's barely enough room to raise your glass.

4. Forget about eating, because there's no way you're getting a table unless you get there at noon. And if you get there at noon, by the time the real party begins later in the evening, you'll be as drunk as those guys starting a brawl in the corner.

3. Those guys starting a brawl in the corner could care less about St. Patrick's Day and what it means to the Irish. Every day is St. Patrick's Day for them; it's just that once a year, their beer is green.

2. Some of the bars have great live music on St. Patrick's Day. But guess what? Most of them have the same great live music the other 364 days of the year, minus the massive crowds and beer-crusted floors.

And the top reason I don't like going out on St. Patrick's Day:

1. The celebration ultimately ends with many people deciding to get into their cars and drive after drinking. So if you're "having the craic" tonight, please have a designated driver, call a cab or use public transportation.

I agree, other than No. 4...Pub food usually isn't that great; I'd be happy to stick to the beer! My top reason for going out on St. Patrick's Day? It's one of a few times where wearing a T-shirt and tennis shoes to the bar is totally OK at almost any bar or restaurant around.

I was DD for a pre-St. Patrick's celebration on Saturday and I ended up with someone spilling a drink on top of my right foot on the dance floor (went right through the eyelets and soaked my sock) while my left foot was stuck to the floor -- not sure if it was gum or spilled beverages.

On the way out, I kept scraping my left shoe on the pavement and stepped in a puddle in hopes that whatever was on my shoe would wash off so that it wouldn't stick to my gas pedal.

My husband said I only noticed the shoe problems because I was sober. Probably true since nobody around me seemed to have any trouble flailing about on the dance floor.

I worked at Sweeney's on Dale in St. Paul four different St. Patrick's days and as a St. Paul hot spot on St. Patrick's Day, I couldn't agree more with these five reasons.
As a bartendder, there was no way possible to serve someone other than your friends in less than 20 minutes. I still have nighmares about the bar being 60 people deep without chairs.
As for the food, we had a menu of three things: fries, corn beef and cabbage and chili and we still couldn't get food out to people in a timely manner.
As for the drunks, on my most mellow St. Patrick's day, I think I was witness to four fights. On days when people weren't butts to elbows, I think I saw four fights in four years of working there... All on drinking holidays.

Interesting, because Sweeney's is actually one of those bars tucked away in my memory of bad St. Patrick's Day experiences!

I don't drink green beer nor do I eat yellow snow. I agree on all that is said. It is just not fun anymore. I am sure the bars made out just fine however I have noticed that cigarette smokers are little piglets when it comes to using outside ashtrays. Then note the outside of the back of bars is gross..You just don't want to touch anything..Too much DNA for me..

Too funny, Bekind!
I have noticed that bars/restaurants are working to figure out how to manage the new traffic flow created by smokers either hovering outside of the entrances or at the back exit doors. I still think that's a better situation than smoking inside the bars, though.

Smoking Outside was a wonderful idea...Especially when it comes to children/pets nearby. My sister quit smoking after she caught an image of people at a well known Business smoking at the front door of a business.... A bunch of people standing outside puffing a cigarette down as fast as possible on break, while shivering in the winter. She said she didn't want to be "one of those." It looked ridiculous and Hidious to her..Honestly...I smoke cigarettes yet can't stand smoke in my face nor do I want to be seen from the road with a bunch of folk smoking. Smoking use to be a classy look way back in the 20's-40's? Now I feel it is destroying myself and others...Mind you, My first cigarette was at a Church Festival at age 13....Now that's bad!..Funny thing is... not one adult said NO to me and my friends.therefore we all kept our first bad habit....Banning cigarettes wouldn't kill anyone.
