I found myself watching "Friday the 13th: Part III" last night. It was bad...so bad I couldn't stop watching. I love Halloween week - cable TV is packed with scary and faux-scary movies.
But as far as actually good scary movies, my favorites are:
"The Shining," a tried-and-true classic that still gives me the creeps;
"Shallow Grave," a must-see British film starring Ewan McGregor;
"Psycho," the Hitchcock classic that really needs no introduction;
"The Birds," which isn't really that scary but is expertly directed, again by Hitchcock;
and "Halloween," the first installment (hey, Michael Meyers' mask is really scary!)
What are YOUR favorites?

Back to page topYes, "The Exorcist" is another classic! That and "Poltergeist," which was on TV last night as well.
On Halloween, we ended up watching "Red Dragon," the third in the "Silence of the Lambs" series. I didn't even see the second one - "Hannibal" - but I thought this third one was actually quite good. Ralph Fiennes is an amazing actor. But as much of an incredible actor as Anthony Hopkins is, I could not stand the sound of his voice in this film. He sounded like the Wicked Witch of the West.
I think Hopkins should put Hannibal and Hannibal-like characters to rest. It's getting old, and he should invest his talents in other types of roles. Then again, he DOES make a great villain.
The books for "The Shining"...

I recently watched "Zodiac" about the serial killer. I really enjoyed it because it had a plot, rather than just being violent for no reason. I thought Jake Gyllenhaal was great.

Back to page topI'm probably not the person to speak expertly on scary movies -- I had nightmares after I watched "Gremlins," which, apparently, isn't supposed to be scary. But, I swear I saw little movements everywhere outside for awhile after that.
Then there's "Children of the Corn" -- I watched it from behind a recliner with my hands over my eyes during part of the movie.
I'm not sure how scary I could watch. I tend to be easily frightened and my daughter never tires of popping out from behind a door to see me jump out of my skin.
