'Fracture': A film men and women can agree on

Filed under:

It's extremely rare that my husband and I watch a movie we both like, so I felt the need to share that "Fracture" is such a film.

There's not much in the movie that hasn't been done before (typical of most big-budget films these days), but it's purely entertaining.

Anthony Hopkins plays a wealthy structural engineer who uses his brilliant but psychotic mind to manipulate pretty much everyone around him, including the young attorney who takes him on after Hopkins' character, Ted, murders his own wife. Ted is like a non-serial-killing version of Hannibal Lecter (minus the cannibalism).

The snappy writing and good performances by Hopkins and several others makes the otherwise typical movie plot shine.

Here's another movie men and women can agree on, "A History of Violence."

It was the worst movie either of us have ever seen.

This movie is slow moving, with a relatively stupid plot.

As one could guess from the title it was violent, but I thought the movie's violence had little to no point (as violence most often does).

The movie leaves a viewer speechless, because you can't believe you would watch the movie for an hour and half to get to the drop-off ending. I don't call it a cliff hanger, because I would rather erase the movie from my head than consider watching a sequel.

Stay away from this one is you like a movie to entertain you.

A History of Violence was the worst movie I've ever seen. Bar none. It was as if a sixth-grader wrote the dialogue.

How about James Bond and the Bourne series for movies guys and girls would both like?

I like action movies as long as they have a plot, some dialogue and keep the "blood and guts" factor at a low level.

"The Illusionist" is another movie I think men and women can agree is great.

Edward Norton and Jessica Biel play great roles and the writing is phenominal. The movie also does a good job of hiding the ending, showing that seeing isn't always believing.

Jessica Biel in a "great role"? She's very pretty, but I've yet to see her act as anything but herself in movies. That said, I like Edward Norton's acting, so maybe I'll rent it sometime.

"The Darjeeling Limited" is...

Back to page top

"The Darjeeling Limited" is a movie playing in theaters that is another one that men and women can agree on.

Wes Anderson, who also wrote, directed and produced "Bottle Rocket," "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," hit this one out of the ball park.

"The Darjeeling Limited" is just as quirky and hilarious as any of his previous films.

This movie, which is about the reunion of three brothers on a train ride through India in hopes to find spirituality, combines adventure, tragedy and comedy in a way that only Anderson can capture.

The movie begins with the adventure through India that is quickly veered off course when over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup, pepper spray and a deadly snake become involved.

Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman are a great trio in this movie. This movie is full of great writing and acting.

That's all the spoiling I am going to do with this one. If you like Wes Anderson check this movie out!!
