Summer's end showcases fruits of labor

» Read similar stories filed under:

I harvested the first "fruits of my labor" from the mini-garden last week.

A single, vine-ripened cherry tomato was hardly a bumper crop, but many green tomatoettes look promising.

This year, I planted:  two tomato plants (cherry, Beef eater), two pepper plants (red, orange), rhubarb, and some herbs (basil, cilantro, oregano, rosemary).

My neighbors probably thought the tomato plants were giant weeds, since I didn't put them in cages right away (the plants, that is, not the neighbors...)

Luckily, the flower boxes  took off like wild, so that distracted people from the vegetable test plot in the backyard.

I didn't realize tomato plants needed to be "locked up" so soon after planting. The Beef eater tomato plant keeps trying to escape. It's on probation, though, after producing one full-sized, ripened tomato yesterday.

At this rate, I may have enough to make a salad by September.

I'm quite entertained with the whole process. I already have plans to expand the "Miller Family Farm" next year.

Any suggestions on what I should add to the garden?
