Holy tomatoes, Batman!

Holy tomatoes, Batman! The tomato plants I plopped into the ground at the last minute this spring/summer are finally producing a full-fledged crop.

So far, two plants have had enough produce that I have tomatoes for salads and burgers once a week, but not so many that I have to worry about what to do with them all.A few full-sized tomatoes, and many minis, have ripened on the vine so far.A few full-sized tomatoes, and many minis,

I'm not sure if the cost of the tomato plants and watering rivals what I would have paid for tomatoes at the store yet, but I guess they're organic since I don't tend to them with any sort of, well, anything, other than water. Their organic status makes them of higher value, right?

Also, I thought I would share a photo of the latest visitor to my flower boxes. With fall, the annuals are slowly starting to give out. I did actually fertilize these a few times over the summer (Go Miracle Gro!), so I'm not sure how long I should expect them to stick around before fall forces them out of the picture."What's all this gardening buzz about?""What's all this gardening buzz about?" Enjoy it while it lasts, buddy!

Those tomatoes look good! My husband and I decided we're going to follow our neighbors' lead and plant a vegetable garden next year, hoping to cut down on the cost of food. We planted basil a couple of years ago, and we had it coming out of our ears. We made homemade pesto more times than I could count.

Thanks - it will be interesting to see if the plants last much longer with this cold snap. My next endeavor is planting tulip bulbs and planning for spring.

My daffodils know nothing of the cold snap -- the flowers I thought were supposed to bloom in the spring continue to display themselves anew, with four or five fresh blooms currently present. I've had them blooming into November before!

As for your tomatoes? Tomatoes ... baaaaad. An unfortunate allergy precludes me from enjoying these acid-filled goodies -- even though I used to be able to pluck one from the garden and eat it without worry.

I've been told that allergies can come or go at any time in your life. I'd like to see this one skedaddle -- especially since I now seem to have an issue with goldenrod or some other thing floating in the air this time of year that never seemed to affect me before. GRRRR!!

I'm confused. I'm new to this whole gardening thing, but aren't daffodils supposed to go away after spring?

That's what I always thought till I met the daffodils that never die. I've already deadheaded a bunch of them and pulled out the dried up brown stalks that are very stick-like and, still, they bloom. I'm thinking that my townhouse may have been built on steroids.

Are you sure they're daffodils and not yellow day lillies? Lillies come up in spring and bloom all summer.

I planted pink tulip bulbs this weekend. It will give me something to look forward to after the freezing winter. (I'm already thinking of spring and the snow hasn't even fallen...) I doubt my garden will look this lush - I just planted clumps of 4 or 5 bulbs along the side of the garage.

My dad and his wife are in the process of pickling. They tried to make a batch garlic pickles, but it was a bit too strong on the garlic, anyone have any tips I could pass along?

FYI -- There is no such thing as too much garlic, too much spice or too much chocolate.

I agree with your reply, Ruth Anne. "Too much" is a relative term that does not apply to garlic... My goodness, you are everywhere aren't you!
