Labor Day was created by union leadership in 1882 to celebrate the "working man."
Somehow, it all sounded like such a great idea that Congress made it a federal holiday in 1894.
So, it's ironic that on Labor Day, rather than taking a day off, most people end up wandering the aisles of Home Depot doing some sort of postponed yardwork or other manual labor as summer dwindles.
Splashy big-box ads tout Labor Day building supply sales with triple-thick flyers on the day designated for relaxing.
Maybe, people who actually do union work take the day to relax, but it's the opposite for other workers? "Manual Labor Day" is our time to shine.
I like to think of it as a weekend where we can take on overly zealous projects, botch them, and we still have an extra day to make up for our mistakes.
