As a writer, I've often met with people dealing with death, illness and other personal tragedies. Usually, the best way I can express my sympathy is to share their story with the community.
Kind acts are a way to convey that emotion, too. Outside of work, one of my friends went to a "cooking store" like Sociale and made weeks worth of frozen meals for another friend coping with cancer in her family. It made a huge difference.
Take time out of your busy day to go out with the suffering person and show them a good time. Listen to their problems and let them sort some things out their own way. Give them space, but interject when they are obviously struggling.
Show compassion and understanding.
Show them you are there for them.
Give them a hug.
Be someone they can count on, not only in the short term, but revisit the problems they are having in future conversations so they know you continue to care about their well-being.
Try to share positivity, along with compassion for their situation.
