What do you think of a state-wide smoking ban?
Will it hurt or help the hospitality industry?
Is a smoking ban an infringement on the rights of restaurant and bar owners to run their private business the way they want?
Does the health risk of second-hand smoke outweigh the right to smoke in an establishment?

Back to page topA few years ago the State of Florida did the same ban on smoking at bars and restaurants.
You could only smoke in a outside patio or open to fresh air area. All the pro smokers said this would be the dire end of business for the bars and restaurants.
Well to say the least this was not the case. Florida bar and restaurants actually see more business then in the past. More people now enjoy their favorite jazz or blues band without the smell of smoke on their clothing when they get home. People that disliked various diners due to over smoking now fill seats that were previously smoking seats.
Minnesota establishments will see this rebound in new smoke free customers. It is true that the smokers are still patrons of the bars and resturants but they now go outside the door and smoke and glare at all who enter or exit. This is a problem only for the smoker or the person that has to clean up there butts.

Back to page topThe last thing we need is the government to be interfering even more in our lives...its not up to them...I think a more important topic is alcohol and the effects of it...ie drunk driving, violence....etc. Smoking is horrible and it smells awful, but it is my choice if I want to breathe it or not...not my government...they should not be making laws like this..what's next?
I think we have better things to focus on such as war, poverty, social security and the treatment and care of our elderly, crime, child molesters, sex offenders, murderers, etc.....If we took all of this small interest group effort for the smoking ban and put it into making sure sex offenders STAY away from the general public and OUR CHILDREN(for example) the world would be a better place. I think the effect on crimes such as these have more of a negative effect than some smoke.....think about it.

What's the difference...
Back to page topWhat's the difference between laws banning drunk driving and smoking? Nothing. The government has every right - and in fact a responsibility - to prevent you from doing so because it endangers others. The government hasn't said you can't drink, just that you can't drink and drive. And now the government hasn't said you can't smoke, just that you can't smoke in certain places.

Back to page topI see, so what is next....I think that government does NOT have that responsibility, I think each individual has their own responsibility. The problem is that people are starting to think that they need others to take care of them, tell them what to do, make sure they tuck us in at night and pull the blankets over us...lets make people responsible for their own decisions such as choosing to go to a restaurant/bar that is smoking.--what I am saying is we should FOCUS on the BIG THINGS...and not these little things. Yes, it is a concern, but lets not spend all this time and taxpayers money on such things. IF we are too spend time and money lets make it worth it and line up our priorities. I could think of a handful of other things that would make precedents. A privately owned business is just that...privately owned..they should make the rules, not government, we dont need a big brother..but it seems its not too far down the road.

Back to page topSo do you think it's the government's responsibility to protect us from people who would choose to murder, rape, kidnap, steal, drive drunk, etc.? I don't think this is any different.
