The Prior Lake-Savage Area School Board will hear recommendations for the name of the new elementary in Savage next week. What are your thoughts on the name, or the naming process, for the new school?
I don't have any thoughts on a specific name for the new elementary school in Savage, but I do have a small recommendation.
Think deeply into the naming of the school. I attended Henry Sibley High School in Mendota Heights. As a student of the school, it is a child's curious nature to wonder what a name means and where it comes from.
As I inquired as to who Henry Sibley was, I found out he was a former governor of Minnesota from Mendota, but he also played a major part in the Dakota Conflict Trials of 1862. Please google this to find out more information, if you are interested. It was said that he wasn't an "Indian-hater," but he participated in the trials and hangings of many Native Americans, so he wasn't a peace-maker either.
Furthermore, our high school's nickname was the Warriors. This was embarrassing to me as a student of that school and still is an embarrassment to me as an alumni. I understand he was a well-known man form the area, but I believe he was hardly worth naming a public school after.
Just my thought. Think deeply into what name the students of Prior Lake-Savage will learn about as they inquire a into the who or what their elementary school is named after.
School names are very important to a community. I think a person's name on a school gives the building character. For instance, you think Henry Sibley High School is a mouthful .... try Loy Norrix High School. Loy Norrix was a long-time superintendent of the Kalamazoo (Michigan) Public Schools and when a second high school was built and named, they honored him. We were the "Knights." But his name -- Loy Norrix -- is a tongue twister! Even so, I don't think it was forgotten by anyone who came across it.
So, for the school in Savage -- I think it should have some character. The name Marion W. Savage Elementary School is already taken; but Dan Patch Elementary School is not. Or, what about naming the school for some of the original landowers or farms in the area? An old Glendale Township map shows Spring Brook Stock Farm and Oak Grove Stock Farm were in the area. Land in the area was owned by families with the last names of: Murphy, Hanrehan, Leonard, Madden, Regan, Boetyer, McKenny, and McColl.
Also, the Credit River flows in the area, but seeing as the township is just down the road, that might be confusing. People who are not from the area still get confused in trying to find Prior Lake High School, because it's not in Prior Lake, it's in Savage. I also think naming it South Savage Elementary is too generic and has no character. Character comes from the people who made Savage home, so I would hope the names suggested for the school would come from those important folks.
