Schools can do a number of things.

--Host an annual cultural fair during the school day can be a fun way to provide students with a glimpse into other cultures. Students could have a passport for the day that takes them into different classrooms to learn about new cultures.

--Offer a variety of languages in school is important. Who knows -- that language may be your passport to another country.

--Promote of studying abroad. I can't emphasize how valuable studying abroad has been for many people I know.

--Encourage -- maybe even assign -- students to read world news from global news organizations and blogs such as the BBC and Global Voices online.

Of course, there are many other -- and more in-depth -- ways to promote diversity.
