Penny pinching 101

Does anyone have any suggestions for saving cash?

Aside from the "latte" factor, where financial planners say to stash away Starbucks money and brew Folgers at home, what are some other ideas?

What are your best secrets for saving?

Expired coupons when grocery shopping work. That's not all I use in the way of coupons but my organizational habits aren't the best. Rarely do checkers pay attention, they just scan the barcode and I smugly grin knowing that I saved 35 cents.

Haha, marbles, I love it!

One thing that has worked for me, and I think it's largely psychological, is buying gift cards for things like gas and my Starbucks addiction. For some reason, I seem to have more money if I buy a $60 gas card and a $40 Starbucks card than if I shelled out the money as I went along.

It's also easier to keep track of my debit account statement, since there are far fewer transactions coming out of that account.

It's nice to know that grocery stores don't look at expired coupons. Good advice marbles.

I know that the restaurants I have worked for will take any coupon expired or good, as well as expired gift certificates.

I too, know that smug grin of saving money at big businesses expense. I am a big fan of using expired pizza coupons. They don't even ask for the coupon most of the time.

I know the feeling Shawn, I can't count how many times I mention the coupon while ordering and they never actually take it. I like to think that businesses just like knowing that their advertising is working.

Back to page top

On a grocery trip last weekend, my friend stopped me from buying vanilla extract at Sam's Club.

She said she makes her own vanilla extract, and she claims to save money (I haven't done the math yet).

All it takes is vanilla bean, vodka or brandy, and time for them to soak to "extract" the flavor.

I'll have to price the cost of beans and alcohol to see if it's an actual savings.

Joanna,
I make my own vanilla as well. I'm not sure if it is less expensive or not but I just wanted to let you know to buy your vanilla beans from e-bay. You can get a dozen for about the same price as 2-3 cost in the stores. They're expensive.

Cheap tickets are one way to save on going out.

I love the rush ticket line at the Guthrie Theater. If you can be flexible (in case you don't get a seat), show up right before the performance and save $17 or more.

Regular tickets cost $32 to $52.

Rush tickets (leftover seats) are $15 each. People start lining up for rush tickets about 45 minutes before a show, and tickets are issued 10 minutes before the show begins.

At the Guthrie, there isn't a bad seat in the house.

How about this. Give up the boob jobs. It's an invasion into the only body you are given and for what? Men's reaction? If that's so then men need so say things like "oh nooo! Back to page top

ok, the previous comment was a bit harsh but really? We are all guilty of over-spending and we could all find a way to save $5.00. Dine-out less often, keep your spending "local" and next time you are thirsty or hungary reach for free water first.
If you do have to eat out take 1/2 of your meal when it comes and box it up for another meal. Portions are way too big for anyone.
I learned from growing up in a small midwestern town to "keep it local". Mom said in order for a town to survive you have to give a little bit o' business to everyone. Plus with the price of gas it's not worth driving the extra miles to save a buck.
Water first because I think we miss-read our bodies signals and eat when we may just be dehydrated. Wait a few minutes and see how you feel. If you still want the "beverage of choice" full of calories, chemicals and fake sugars ok but have a smaller portion if IT. Your body will thank you and you will save money.

Back to page top

Skip plastic surgery as a way to save cash?!? Are that many people really dropping money into breast enhancements, etc. in Prior Lake?

I can relate more with Acorn's last comment about boxing half a meal from the restaurant and bringing it home. Usually portions are overwhelming, and most people are trying to watch their waistlines. Diners can spread the cost of dining out over two meals (dinner and lunch the next day).

As for keeping it local, I'd love for anyone to comment on local "good deals" they've found south of the river!

One thing I'be heard from a financial expert -- but never tried it myself -- is to take your coin change at the end of the day, put it in a jar, and consider that saved money. She said it adds up quicker than you can believe, and it's a good way to put money away.

I do put my change away at the end of the day, and the financial expert is right Pat. I never use my pocket change at stores. I put it in a large olive jar and use it for a vacation fund. Inexpensive date night AND a great way to people watch: pull together a picnic dinner (or stop by Chipotle and split a fajita burrito), head to Peavy Plaza in downtown Minneapolis for the free "Alive After Five" summer concert series, and buy a $4 beer at the stand there. The plaza has quite a few food stands, but you're better off getting dinner somewhere else for less money.

There's no better way to spend a warm summer evening with your sweetie than with cheap food and beer and free music at a beautiful plaza (complete with fountains) in the heart of the city.

But hurry - the series ends when June does. Here are the remaining dates and performances:

06/27/2007
Free. 5-9 p.m. G.B. Leighton.
06/29/2007
Twin Cities Jazz Festival
06/30/2007

Here's a penny-pinching tip...

Back to page top

Here's a penny-pinching tip for you Taste of Minnesota goers to bring along to Harriet Island next year.

If you have extra food tickets on the night of the 4th, make one last swing past the food booths. Don't be that person who throws the left-over tickets away.

I had six tickets left last night. If you went ot the Taste this year, you know that barely gets you a water.

As I was on my walk out, I held my tickets in my hand as I approached the Dino's booth.

I told the lady at the booth, "I have six tickets left, that'll get me a sandwich right?"

Knowing full well that wouldn't cover the cost of lettuce at the Taste.

"Sure, take this home with you for lunch tomorrow," she said taking my six tickets and wrapping a gyro to go.

Score!!!

It appears that in the same manner that I had left-over tickets, they had left-over sandwiches.

I walked out with a half-priced gyro. And they didn't have to waste a perfectly good sandwich.

Back to page top

I saved maybe $20 in a year this way:

Back in the day, when I was working at the Prior Lake American and Savage Pacer and going to school, I abstained from butter, as well as all other foods that weren't grilled-cheese sandwiches (also sans butter, of course). Grilled cheese and water makes a great lunch -- seriously!

I have to be honest, though. I did have the smallest (cheapest) meal plan that Northwestern College offered. So I ate something besides grilled cheese. My college friends still tease me about offering them unbuttered grilled-cheese sandwiches, but they admit that they weren't bad.

That $20 got me into like four punk rock shows.
