The Mitchell Report

Filed under:

Well, the Mitchell Report is out. Is anyone really shocked by its findings?

I'm not. Even the great Roger Clemens, who still is the greatest pitcher in the history of the game and a first ballot Hall of Famer no matter what the Mitchell Report has concluded, made the list.

I'm so bored with steriods. Can we move on? Major League Baseball has policies in place now. The steroid era is over. Are we going to continue to beat a dead horse and be shocked and befuddled over names and who did what? It's constant speculation. It's constant hearsay.

And since nobody - other that Barry Bonds lying to the grand jury - will be going to trial over the Mitchell Report are baseball fans going to keep talking about it. Are fans going to keep caring about it? Is the media (ESPN) going to continue to ask the same moronic questions?

And all of sudden clubhouse attendants, who are trying to keep themselves out of jail, are credible? Please. What happened to innocent until proven guilty. Not in the court of public opinion, which is the only court that matters.

I love how Major League Baseball is suddenly getting tough on steroids. I love how the media is now covering it like the JFK assisination (conspiracy? absolutely).

MLB turned its head in the late 1990s when Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire were hitting all those homers. The game was at a all-time high coming off the 1994 strike and MLB was loving it. Don't think for a second it didn't at least suspect there was a problem. MLB did and did nothing. It turned its head.

That's why Bud Selig is the biggest idiot on the planet when it comes to being a commissioner of a major sport. The same goes for the media.

The media was busy kissing the butts of McGwire and Sosa that it failed miserably in breaking the story back then. Some sports writers even admit to missing warning signs and not following up on possible leads.

MLB and the media (ESPN) are a bunch of hypocrits. MLB is acting tough and the media is trying to make up for its past blunders. Geez, talk about hoping on and off the bandwagon.

And, of course, Bonds, who is guility in my book, is the ultimate punching bag. It's easy to pick on him because he's been nothing more than jerk his entire career. But now there's Clemens, the media's darling over the years.

I wonder if there will be a double-standard or cries of racism? You bet there will be. It's coming soon to a Sports Center near you.

This whole steroid thing has been a mess from the get-go. It's been screwed up since day one. It's time to move on. I, for one, will not let any steroid talk ruin my opening day in April.

To me, now that the stupid Mitchell Report is out, the story is almost over. All that is left is Bonds' trial.

Yippie!

I agree, Tom. This $1.4...

I agree, Tom. This $1.4 million ho-hum report really is beating a dead horse.

I heard it stated best yesterday when a radio talk-show host said the report was like taking all the books that have been written about Muhammad Ali and re-releasing them in a new format. It may be interesting, but it isn’t anything that hasn’t been written or said before.

There’s a good use of a million dollars. Let’s hype up a report, restate the obvious and play it to death in the media (ESPN).

Upon releasing the report, Sen. Mitchell urged Bud Selig not to reprimanding any of the players named in the report.

Sooo, what was the reason for the report?

And oooo… What will Bud Selig do now?

Continue to turn his head? That’s my bet, as you stated he’s been doing it for years.

Or come down like a ton of bricks on all MLB’s superstars.

I can’t wait to see what comes of this… (I’m being facetious, of course.)

I didn’t learn anything from this report that I hadn’t heard rumors of before (even Roger Clemens rumors have been out there). Look at the size of the guy’s head for goodness sake.

OK, I was surprised to see Rondell White’s name on the report.

Can this guy do anything right?

He sure as heck can’t hit.

I thought steroids were supposed to be performance enhancing, White sucks.

Maybe he has been paying for and injecting a placebo? I think there should be a report done on that.

John Rocker? There’s a surprise. Can you say roid rage?

Barry Bonds? Guilty or not, leave the guy alone, already.

Jose Canseco? So the rat likes the poison, too. I thought Canseco admitted to this six years ago.

Ken Caminiti? What drugs didn’t this guy take.

Rafael Palmero? Yep.

Eric Gagne? Uh huh.

Click here for the full list of “shockers.”

Other than dragging these players names through the mud, what is this $1.4 million report going to be used for.

More importantly, what is going to happen to the value of my baseball cards, now that all my childhood heroes are confirmed dope fiends?

I wonder who Mark McGuire paid to keep his name off the list.

Did Mitchell forget to read the “books” of information about his alleged drug use?

I can’t wait for this “scandal” to die.

And yes, I agree JFK’s assassination was a conspiracy, as well.

While steroid use has been...

While steroid use has been rampant in sports for my entire life (remember the Russian and Chinese swim teams?) and recreational use of steroids is harmful to one's body, people forget that there ARE legit health reasons to prescribe steroids - especially to athletes.

Just because one "dealer" chose to cooperate, does not mean he is any more believable than the players.

Although I would not be broken hearted if this scandal were to cause Commissioner Selig to lose his job. He has done more, in his tenure as Commissioner, to damage the sport than any of these players have!

First, to Tom, I couldn't...

Back to page top

First, to Tom, I couldn't disagree with you more on your statement that Clemens is the greatest pitcheer of all-time, but I'll leave it at that.

While the Mitchell Report is more style than substance, I think it's important because at the very least it helps to start a culture of accountability in baseball. For all that the league has ignored, this forces at least some current memebers to come clean. Look at Brian Roberts and Andy Pettite, already talking about what they did. That's a start.

The coverage of it, like most things in news these days, has been sensationalized and overcovered to the point where people (include myself) lose interest and begin not to care. To me, that doesn't diminish the importance of the report in showing that players can't just get away with everything anymore.

I'd like to point out one thing though ... while I know that the Mitchell Report had no subpeona power, and could have led to many more names, two of the poster children for steroids in the 90's weren't mentioned on the list ... Sosa and McGwire. I found that the most interesting of all. Outside of Andro (which was fully legal in many sports at the time), and Jose Canseco (who I think is certifiably nuts) McGwire has never had any evidence provided that would nail him to the wall. Neither has Sosa.
