Our neighboring communities have very active senior and/or community centers. During the 2007 tax season I volunteered with AARP to provide free, e-filed tax returns for seniors and low income clients. This was a very rewarding experience for me, and would recommend that anyone interested check it out via the Minnesota Revenue web site. AARP, in partnership with the IRS and MN Revenue, provides training for individuals to become certified as counselors. Prior Lake seniors should have access to this service as do residents of Burnsville, Lakeville and Shakopee. The Burnsville Senior Center hosts weekly evening tax sessions, Shakopee Community Center hosts weekly daytime sessions. In addition to tax services, the Burnsville Senior Center provides meals, hosts clubs of all sorts, provides educational opportunities, travel and many other activities and events. Those involved in starting the center in Prior Lake should check it out.
