Looks like it all comes down to the big game, Tom ;) Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

(P.S. How can you say we're cold? Our mascot is a cute, mythical bird that got its name from historical figures who battled for Kansas to be a free state against slavery)

See:

and, as for our "Rock Chalk" chant you'll hear...that's a little nerdier...

As funny as putting devil horns, halos, clown hats and the such on Roy Williams is, I'm sorry Joanna, I have to go against the Jay Hawks and root for Roy and the Tarheels this weekend. (I've always been a big fan of UNC basketball.) Should be a great game.

Here's another KU forward that's circulating with the pre-game buzz:

"Our Father, who art in Lawrence ,

Hallowed be thy Game.

Thy tourney come,

Thy championship will be done, In San Antonio as it is in Allen Field
House.

Give us this day our deserved victories.

And forgive us our turnovers,

As we forgive Roy who double-crossed against us.*

And lead us not into defeat,

But deliver us from East Coast bias,

For Kansas is the basketball kingdom,

And the tradition,

And the glory,

For ever and ever.

Amen.

GO JAYHAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Wasn't the championship game great!?! I loved that it came down to overtime play. The teams were so evenly matched that either team could have taken home the trophy and I would have been happy.

I feel asleep with Memphis up by 10 points with about 3 minutes to play.

I woke up and the game was late into overtime and I thought, "Overtime, what happened? How did Memphis blow this?"

Then I saw the Chalmers shot and all the missed free throws by Memphis.

Ya gotta make your free throws down the stretch if you want to win a championship.

Agreed on all three points...

Agreed on all three points that it was a great championship game, I couldn't believe Memphis State blew the lead and you have to make free throws down the stretch to win a championship.
Here's a question I would be asking the Memphis State coach: You're up by three points with under 10 seconds to go. Why don't you tell your players to foul?
You send them to the line for two free throws and get the ball back with a one point lead if they make both.
Kansas made Memphis shoot from the charity stripe and they missed.
There is a lot of pressure when it comes down to it. If I'm a coach up by three with seconds to play, I foul, make the team make their free throws and get the ball back.
I don't know, that's just me.

With the way that Memphis was shooting free throws, I don't know if I foul UCLA or not. The real mistake was not calling a time out after Collison's shot. If you can get the ball into Rose somehow, with how quick he is, you have a chance at a much better shot than what Memphis took at the end of regulation.

This is my problem with Basketball.
While I am happy for KU, the last 2 minutes of a game are ridiculous.

For any team to win because the other team can't shoot free throws seems wrong to me.

In a similar fashion,
As an auto racing fan, nothing make me more frustrated then to see something like a F1 or Indy race won, not because one car or driver is better but based on the performance of a guy changing tires.

Free throws are part of the...

Back to page top

Free throws are part of the game, too, though...even if the Memphis coach didn't think so going into the game! The quotes from this press conference will probably haunt him for a while:

Teresa Walker, Associate Press:
Q:You talked a lot about not worrying about free throws expecting to be made at the pressure points. Fifteen made yesterday. Does that worry you at all or are they still making them when you'd like them to?

A:We'll be fine. We made one more free throw than they did, so we beat them at the free throw line. We missed a couple down the stretch that I was surprised that we did miss, but again we shot 75 percent in our tournament, which was last week. We shot 70 percent last year. We shot in the mid 60's in the first game; well we had a bad game. Every once in awhile we'll do this, then we'll come back and shoot 75 percent and no one will say anything. It's almost to the point of do you really even know what my team does well or doesn't do well or is it because you don't know, you just say its free throw shooting that's all I'm going to talk about. They're not talking about how we blocked shots. We had 11 blocked shots and you turn on the TV and all it's talking about is they missed free throws and it's going to cost them a championship. We had 11 blocked shots. We played great team defense. Offensively against the zone we got it where we wanted it against a great defensive team that is second in the country in field goal percentage defense. We only had five turnovers. Wait a minute let me say that again, we only had five turnovers. But everybody all they want to talk about is our free throw shooting. I don't know why. I come back to the conclusion that maybe they haven't seen our team play nor do they really know and the easy thing to talk about off the stat sheet is our free throws. Maybe I'm wrong though.
