Do you know about Dubai?

Have you heard what Dubai is doing? Dubai City, in the United Arab Emirates, has done the impossible, quite literally: it has created more than 300 man-made islands in the Persian Gulf off the coast of its mainland, including three palm-shaped islands and 300 smaller islands that actually make up the shape of all seven continents. Each of the three main islands have massive hotels and luxury homes, roads and infrastructure to serve as many as a quarter of a million people at a time. The far-out demands of an oil-rich Sheikh were made possible by incredible, previously untried and unimagined technological and architectural feats. Check out http://www.thepalm.ae/ and watch the National Geographic Channel's excellent series of programs on this "eighth wonder of the world." The channel will rebroadcast the episodes this Sunday, Aug. 19, at noon, 1 and 2 p.m. Central time.

I think it could prove to be a rude awakening for Westerners if they go during Muslim Ramadan - a month of fasting. According to Lonely Planet travel guide, during the month, that changes annually, it's illegal to eat, drink or smoke in public from sunrise to sunset. If you notice discouted hotel rates - I'd take a look at the calendar before booking a trip if you don't follow that tradition.
Usually, I spend most of my vacations eating and drinking (no smoking, though). That would take out two of the major trip highlights right there!

Airfare to Dubai is approximately $1,500 PER PERSON, and one night in a suite at the Burj al-Arab, the world's tallest hotel, located on one of the islands, can cost up to $28,000. Yep...$28,000 per night.
