Sound Off: What’s in a name?

Average: 5 (2 votes)

Band names are like the oft-quoted line from Shakespeare: Some are as sweet as a rose, but some just plain stink. Whether a group’s name aptly represents its image and sound or simply serves as a way to alphabetize their discs in a record store, all bands must come up with one – for better or worse.

What are some of your favorite band names? Which ones should have been left on drawing board?

To get the ball rolling, here are just a few for each column from this blogger’s perspective:

Sweet – Radiohead, Soundgarden, The Replacements
Stinks – Death Cab for Cutie, Hoobastank, Limp Bizkit

I like Old and in the Way, an old bluegrass group with Jerry Garcia and Vasser Clemens among others.
Another bluegrass band name I like is Blueground Undergrass. I also like the Velvet Underground, Social Distortion,
Phish, the Talking Heads. Soul Coughing, the Disco Biscuits and INXS, just to name a few.
Great blog!

Back to page top

I love that Bob Dylan's back-up band in the mid-60's released their own music under a name as simple as "The Band."

Some others are "The Hold Steady," "Government Mule," "Trampled by Turtles" and "Rage Against the Machine."

I've always thought that "Midnight Oil" was an awful name.

Hey, Trampled by Turtles is a great band name.
These Duluthians put on a great live show, too. I've sen them tons of times.
I was going to mention the Mule, as well, great band name. The actual name of the band is Gov't Mule. Warren Haynes is the man.
I also like the name the String Cheese Incident and Widespread Panic.

Back to page top

OK, some band names that start with THE are not sweet. There's The The a simple case of a band trying too hard to be clever and failing miserably. There's The Barenaked Ladies, The Polyphonic Spree, and The Spice Girls, to name a few.

Back to page top

The reverse of bands with "the" in their name is when people attempt to place "the" in a band's name when the name doesn't have one.

For instance, people almost always say "THE Counting Crows" and "THE Smashing Pumpkins," when, in fact, it's "Counting Crows" and "Smashing Pumpkins."

Back to page top

Tom, the object is to come up with names that are "sweet" or "stink," not names that start with "the" - though I sure am enjoying your brainstorming efforts!

Sweet: U2, Radiohead, Aqualung, R.E.M., Nine Inch Nails, Dead Milkmen, the Police, Arctic Monkeys, the Killers, the Flaming Lips

Stinks: Maroon 5 (much as I love them, their name is crappy); Matchbox 20 (Ok, pretty much any band with a number in their name other than U2); Limp Bizkit, Hoobastank, Oingo Boingo, Coldplay (again, a band I love but whose name has just never made any sense); Harmonica Lewinksy (never heard of them until just now when I searched for "band names" on Google).

Back to page top

U2 is a great name. It could be a reference to a spy plane, or it could be a play on words ("you, too"; "you two").

Back to page top

A couple more for the trash heap: Air Supply (this would only be a good band name if you lived in Atlantis) and Boston (this is not even a good band name if you live in Boston); also 30 Odd Foot of Grunts (which is Russell Crowe's band, which brings up an entirely different topic about stinking bands and the actors that start them -- but since the digression has already happened, how bad a name is 30 Seconds to Mars -- Jared Leto's band? And then there's Dogstar, Keanu Reeves' ill-named band). And though I love the band, I can't support naming a group The Flying Burrito Brothers.

On the plus side: The Minutemen, Jane's Addiction, Pavement and Crazyhorse.

That sounds like it would be a fun show. I have trouble coughing up $40 for a concert ticket now, but I might be willing to pay if they incorporated UFC moves, an Irish band and a fluff band from the '80s. Sounds like a hit reality series in the making...
