Sound Off: Minnesota music
April 24, 2008 - 1:16pm — BakerBlog
Minnesota is arguably as melodious as any state in the union. Over the years, it has produced almost as many great musicians and bands as it has lakes – and the variety is as diverse as the weather. From the reverb-drenched sounds of The Trashmen in the ‘60s (anyone remember “Surfin’ Bird”? – “A-well-a, b-b-b-bird, bird is the word …”) to Prince’s reign over the pop charts in the mid-‘80s; from helping elevate folk into the realm of poetry with the export of Bob Dylan to the Cities’ post-punk heyday that spawned acts like The Suburbs and Hǘsker Dǘ; from blues legends such as Lamont Cranston and Spider John Koerner to the hard rock of Slaveraider and American Head Charge – Minnesota has delivered something for everyone. This blogger’s favorite Minnesota contribution to the larger musical gene pool will always be The Replacements – the Twin Cities tipplers, ragtag romantics and, ultimately, self-saboteurs who influenced more rock bands than they sold records. The Mats’ first four albums – constituting a slop-rock, proto-grunge paradise and originally released on the local Twin/Tone label – finally got the deluxe reissues they deserve this week. Whether current or former, famous or provincial, who or what composes your favorite Minnesota music? |

Back to page topI have to go with Bob Dylan.
Trampled by Turtles is an upcoming bluegrass band from Duluth who are a lot of fun to see, they too are in my favorites from Minnesota.
I also enjoyed (noticed the past tense) the Big Wu for a long time, but I think they fell apart musically in recent years.
Prince is an easy Minnesota favorite.
You have to repect Soul Asylum and The Replacements.
I also enjoy the live shows of Wookiefoot, God Johnson, who play weekly at the Cabooze, and The New Primatives, who play at Nye's Polonaise every Thursday.
Some of my friends used to play in a band called the Beads, who to this day is one of my favorite Minnesota bands.
I'll keep thinking and add to this later...

Back to page topTom, didn't you write about a band from Savage who had a hit in the past about wrastling? (I know it's wrestling).
You should provide the Youtube link to that!!

I'll see if I can find it on the Web.

Back to page topI interned with Twin Tone in college. It really was amazing how many local musicians represented by Twin Tone influenced bands around the country, and world for that matter.

Back to page topI knew I was forgetting some fun Minnesota musicians. Rhymesayers Entertainment put Twin Cities hip hop on the global map with Atmosphere and Brother Ali.

Back to page topOn my very first visit to Minnesota about six years ago, I stepped off the plane and headed downtown to Bunkers, where I saw G.B. Leighton -- it was love at first sound.
Whether it's original music or covers, I truly enjoy watching/hearing this band perform and I have become somewhat of a groupie. I've seen them perform more than any other group, I've bought CDs and T-shirts and I have one of Brian's guitar picks -- "Yeah Yeah Yeah"
