Sound Off: Admit it

Average: 5 (1 vote)

Everyone has an album or a song (a guilty pleasure, so to speak) that you wouldn't want your friends to find out you enjoy listening to. One example for me is Stripped by Christina Aguilera. A perfectly good album, but to some of my acquaintances a purchase I should be very ashamed of. I'll also admit to groovin' to Bon Jovi, The Outfield, Night Ranger and Britney Spears in my van when I come across them on the radio. I've admitted my shameful music moments - now it's your turn. What music do you secretly love? What songs do you crank up sing along with when you're all alone in the car? Come on admit it - you're safe here - no one will judge you.

My heart's on fire Elvira... The Oak Ridge Boys had me at their first "mow mow". Who doesn't love to sing along with this old gem? (btw, that was a rhetorical question)

COLOR ME SENTIMENTAL...I am...

COLOR ME SENTIMENTAL...I am a closet Bread fan. At one time, the mere thought of myself owning a Bread CD would indicate the fall of western civilization. Now that I am cutting down on carbs, I realized that THIS Bread is food for my soul. (sick, I know)
A couple of years ago my soon-to be husband and I parked the truck in the driveway and listened to "Everything I Own" at an EXTREME VOLUME at 2:30 in the morning. Maybe I was emotionally vulnerable at that time of night. Whatever it was, I actually LISTENED to the lyrics for once, and it didn't seem at lame as it did in the 70's.
We liked it so much, we chose it as our dollar dance song at our wedding last summer. Now when I listen to these lyrics...
"You taught me how to love,
what it's of,
You never said too much,
but still you showed the way,
and I knew from watching you."
Reminds me of dancing with each of my 5 older brothers along with other family members.
My heart melts into a big sappy puddle every time I hear it now.
Do I need to wear a paper bag over my head?

I hate to admit it, but when "Rich Girl" by Daryl Hall and John Oates comes on the radio I have a hard time turning it off. I guess that's the definition of a guilty pleasure, right.

This must be a guilty pleasure, because I'm very hesitant to admit it ... but I spent more time than I care to say spinning Enya's New-Agey "Shepherd Moon" during a year or two in college. I used to rationalize it by saying it was good studying music, but I don't seem to remember studying very much, but I do rember that disc playing a lot.

I stopped being ashamed of...

Back to page top

I stopped being ashamed of my musical "faux pas" some time ago. There's simply too much joy to be had in a song such as N'Sync's "Bye, Bye, Bye" to not include it on my iPod proudly, right alongside Radiohead (go ahead, Thom Yorke, cringe).

That doesn't mean there aren't still songs I thoroughly despise ("Piece of Me" by Britney Spears is, I think, one of the worst songs ever recorded. I like a lot of other Britney songs, but that one is just terrible).

Nor does it mean I don't end up actually sort of liking some of those thoroughly despised songs (one day recently, my husband's incessant singing/rapping of Flo Rida's "Low" finally broke me down and I caught myself singing/rapping it while getting ready for work).

Whatever gets us through the day, I guess! If it makes you happy, it can't be that baaaaaaaaaaad...

Turn to Stone by ELO lives...

Back to page top

Turn to Stone by ELO lives in rather heavy rotation on my iPod and while I'm not sure if it's a guilty pleasure it's not something I'd openly admit to in front of those I interact with on a daily basis.
